A look at the Dereva Chonjo initiative

One of the current government visions is to transform Nairobi city into a metropolis by 2030. I addition to increased traffic flow, this vision will also make road traffic accidents a central concern for the health system.

Road traffic injuries are currently ranked ninth globally among the leading causes burden, in terms of disability adjusted life years (DALYs) lost. In 2020, road traffic injuries are projected to become the third largest cause of disabilities in the world.

With the government being determined to improve the road network in Kenya, many roads will experience increased mea speed due to their improved conditions. Current trends following major accidents have always been a matter of public relation with some leaders taking these heart breaking loses as opportunities to boost their popularity.

This simple initiative by Frotcom east Africa and the big voice of airtell Kenya to pioneer a road safety initiative that can be quickly adopted by a number of transporters across the country and beyond is a step in the right direction.

Starting with 2NK Sacco, we stand a chance of reducing the speed of over 600 vehicles frequently using the Thika super high way and other accident prone roads both in central and Rift Valley.

Strategic partnership

We can all copy from the vision of global road safety partnership which states “A world free of road crash death and injury. “It is mankind that invented motorized transport just over 100years ago, an astonishingly valuable mobility tool that has revolutionalized global development. Unfortunately the moving vehicles bring with them huge amounts of energy-far more than a human body can withstand on impact. We allow vehicles and people to come into close contact very regulary, and the resulting losses globally are disastrous –over 3000people are being killed every day, 700of them are children.

However, something that mankind has developed can also be controlled by mankind. For example, in the air, where in 2010, not one single fare paying passenger was killed in the OECD countries. Some countries have shown that they can bring death and injury down through systematic attention to the legal and regulatory environment, coupled with continuous public education and enforcement of the law. Some cities have shown they can get all their children to and from school safely, year in year out .some companies have shown that they can manage large vehicles fleets for years without death or injury.

Reap benefits

We need to build and extend upon these successes in all sectors of society until we can reap the benefits of motorized mobility without accepting the catastrophic social losses that are now occurring.

Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa writing to the United Nations General assembly said “from time to time in human history there comes a killer epidemic that is not recognized for it is and is not acted against until it is almost too late.HIV/AIDS, which is ravaging sub-Saharan Africa, is one such. Road traffic injuries have the potential to be another. We ignore road crash at our peril. This is predominantly a killer of the poor. It is the poorest communities which live alongside the fastest roads. It is the poorest children who have to negotiate the most dangerous route to school. It the most vulnerable roads users; pedestrians and cyclists who are at the greatest risk yet are the most routinely forgotten by planners and policy makers .it the time for those who can make a real difference-the governments, international financial institutions, the donor community, development activists and the millions who are angry but silent –to step up to meet this challenge and commit to a decade of road safety’.

It is noteworthy that three months after the promulgation of  the Michuki rules ,road accidents declined nationally by 74 per cent while accidents involving urban transport buses fell by a whopping 93 percent .although is no longer the case, it clearly shows that it is possible  to reduce  road carnage on our Kenyan roads.

 

Heavy costs

The exchequer, the general public and private businesses pay heavy costs for the hospitalization, treatment and rehabilitation of accidents victims. They also bear the price of material damage to motor vehicles, mobile plant equipment, and damaged merchandised and lost man hours.

This is without counting the cost of fuel wasted in incessant traffic jams and the ever rising premiums of underwriting the high risks associated with public transport.

The mighty powers behind the  matatu Sacco is usually felt  when they turn a whole nation into a walking nation  whenever there is a dispute, but behind this power, there is a potential that can turn them into prefects of road safety and ensure that our roads are safe if only they can be handled well.

Speed is one of the major factors contributing to accidents in Kenyan roads. Speeding can be divided into three categories;

Excessive speeding –where speeding behavior is quite deliberate and the driver exceeds the speed limit by a considerable degree.

Low level speeding –where the driver travels at a speed marginally over the posted speed limit, typically by 5km/h(research shows the majority of motorists engage in low level speeding, and inappropriate speeding –traveling at a speed that is inappropriate for the conditions may be “risky” to travel at the speed limit when the road is wet.

All of this types of speeding are dangerous .speeding reduces the time driver have to avoid crashes .their ability to control the vehicles lengthens stopping distances, increasing both the likelihood of crashing and the severity of the crash outcome.

Safety philosophy states that; humans make errors; road transport systems should minimize the opportunity for error and the harm done when errors occur; studies have demonstrated beyond doubt that the faster drivers choose to travel, the more likely they are to be involved in an accident.

Frotcom intends to provide system that can aid in calming the speed of all public service vehicles all over the country from the comfort of the office and in way protect the vulnerable road users.

The united nations general assembly has proclaimed  the period 2011-2020 as the decade of action for road safety, ‘with a goal to stabilize and then reduce the forecast level of road traffic fatalities around the world by increasing activities conducted at the national, regional and  global level.”

Calling for help

We are calling for your help to support this initiative by offering your vehicles to be fitted with the Frotcom fleet management system which has been tested and proven so that you can add to the numbers of the vehicles whose speed on the road is being monitored all the time. This simple initiative may cost the government nothing but will save a lot of money for the government in addition to saving precious lives.

For those who are traveling along the routes that are being plied by 2nk can be at least be sure    that if  they board  a 2NK vehicle chances of being involved in a bad road crash are less   than other transporters so why not give priority to using the  2NK vehicles when travelling?
